Can't remember what colour flowers these have when they bloom
Paeonia genus (Peony). There are about 33 species in this genus of beautiful perennials and shrubs. They are long-lived and rather woody with swollen roots. The large leaves have leaflets which are usually toothed or lobed. The flowers bloom in shades of pink or red but there are also white and yellow-flowered species.
They will grow well in climates with a cold winter. They need a sheltered position in full or slightly filtered sunlight and moist, rich and well-drained soil. Large-flowered cultivars require support.
Grown for their bold foliage, showy blooms and in some species colourful seed pods. Flower arranging.
As Alice Morse Earle the American author and historian (1851-1911) memorably wrote: "The Peony always looks like a well-dressed, well-shod, well-gloved girl of birth, breeding, and of equal good taste and good health; a girl who can swim and hike and play golf ..."
