Description

Alstroemeria ‘Princess Lilian’ (Peruvian lily). This Peruvian lily is a dark magenta-purple colour, with the inner petals having a small flash of deep yellow and prominent dark brown marks. There is also a central dark brown line on the upper inner petal.

Origin

S. America

The genus was named after the Swedish botanist Baron Clas Alstromer 1736-94, a pupil of Linnaeus at Uppsala University who travelled widely collecting plants for Linnaeus.

Interest and use

Flowers last well when used for floral arrangements. Borders. Suitable for coastal conditions.

Cultivation

Frost hardy, but in very cold winters protect by covering dormant tubers with dry bracken or loose peat. Needs a well drained soil in a sunny, sheltered site.
