Description

Alternanthera versicolor. This perennial upright species will produce spoon-shaped mid green leaves, marked with combinations of orange, red, yellow and purple markings. This species will grow about 30cm high and 30cm wide. Small white flowers on axillary spikes are produced in summer.

The name Alternanthera comes from the Latin alternus - alternate; and anthera - anther. This is reference to the fact the anthers are alternately bare.

Interest and use

Grown as a foliage plant. In termperate areas it is used for edging borders as a summer annual, or as a houseplant.
