Description

Lablab niger. A fast growing, twining perennial climber producing 3-palmate mid green leaves 10-15cm long. Bears fragrant, purple or white flowers in racemes 20-40cm long in late summer and autumn. Edible green flushed purple and contains whiteish-brown beans. Native to Africa.

Interest and use

Grown for its attractive, pea-like flowers (in tropics is grown for green manure and animal feed, and for its edible pods and seeds). Suitable for coastal conditions.

Cultivation

They are frost tender, and are easily grown in any moist but well-drained soil in a sunny position. In cool climates it can be grown as an annual, but it will need a long warm summer for the best growth. You can propagate from seed or cuttings.
