Description

Acacia karroo (Karru wattle). The bark of this small tree is red brown becoming dark brown. Leaves are dark green, alternate and bipinnate. The flowers are golden yellow, fragrant and spherical, and are produced in clusters along the current season's branches. The seed pods hang in bundles and are long, thin, and sickle shaped and ripen to reddish brown, becoming twisted as they split.

Interest and use

The gum from the tree is used as a substitute for gum arabic and used for all manner of purposes including dye, glue, detergent, and as a glaze for pottery. The roots are used in traditional medicine. The wood is hard and durable and used for cart wheels, tool handles, fence posts etc. The wood also yields a yellow dye which is used to tan leather. It is also grown as a cattle barrier, to prevent erosion, as bee fodder and grazing for goats.

Cultivation

Frost hardy to frost tender, min 5-7C. They require full sun and well-drained soil. Under glass, use a loam-based potting compost with full light. Outside, moderate fertile soil and full sun.

Propagation

Propagate by seed in the spring. Soak them in warm water until swollen first. Root semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
