Description

Lathyrus genus (Sweet pea). The genus consists of about 150 species of annuals and perennials, many of them are tendril climbers and some of them are edible. The leaves are pinnate, with racemes of pea-shaped flowers that come in a wide range of colours from red, pink, mauve and white to blue and even pale yellow. The flowers are followed by long thin seed pods.

Interest and use

Grown for their racemes of attractive flowers. Attracts butterflies

Cultivation

You can plant these frost-hardy plants in fertile, well-drained soil with full sun. They will need staking. Provide support and remove dead flowers regularly. Cut down perennials in late autumn.

Propagation

By seed the annuals (soaked before sowing) in early spring or early autumn, perennials by seed in autumn or by division in spring.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Botrytis, aphids and mildew may be problematic.
