Description

Acacia longifolia (Sydney golden wattle). This fast-growing Acacia produces fragrant long spikes of yellow fluffy flowers and has narrow, oblong, dark green phyllodes. It is ideal for hedging.

Origin

This shrub is native to the Australian coast.

Interest and use

Hedging. Suitable for coastal conditions. The bark is used to tan sheepskin. A yellow dye can be made from the flowers and a green dye from the seed pods. It is also grown to stop the erosion of coastal land.

Cultivation

Considered an invasive plant in S. Africa and Portugal. Needs full sun and well drained soil.
