Description

Lilium maculatum (Lily). A short-stemmed lily with ribbed stems and elliptic, lance-shaped leaves from 5-10cm. in early summer produces bowl-shaped orange, red or yellow flower which are spotted. Native to Japan.

Grown for their often fragrant, brightly coloured flowers. Makes a good container plant.

Cultivation

They will need good drainage. Some prefer alkaline soil, others will not tolerate it. They all prefer the sun, but make sure the roots are deep to keep them cool. They can be propagated by means of offsets from the main bulb or seeds.

Propagation

Seed in autumn or spring, by bulb scales in summer or by stem bulbs (where present) in autumn.

Viruses, fungal diseases, leather jackets and lily beetle may cause problems.
