Description

Macadamia genus. There are about 11 species, they are made up of small to medium evergreen rainforest trees. Their leathery narrow leaves are usually in whorls of 3 or 4 on the twigs, they have smooth or toothed edges. They will bear small flowers which are crowded on cylindrical spikes. They are frost tender, with a min temp of 10-13C. They will prefer full light, though a little shade is tolerated. Grow in humus-rich, moisture-retentive, well drained soil. You can propagate by seeds when ripe, in the autumn or in spring.

Interest and use

Grown for its foliage and fruits (nuts).

Cultivation

They are frost tender, they require sun, plenty of water and fertile, moist but well-drained soil. You can propagate from ripe seed in the autumn. Pruning is not usually necessary, but is tolerated in autumn.
