Description

Meconopsis genus (Asiatic poppy). This genus consists of about 45 species of annuals, biennials and short-lived perennials. They will bear large, exotic flowers with papery petals and a bold, central boss of stamens on tall stems.

Interest and use

Grown for their flowers.

Cultivation

They are fully hardy and will need shade, and, in warm areas, a cool position. Most species will prefer humus-rich, moist, neutral to acidic soil.

Propagation

Propagate by seed when fresh,(all but M.sheldonnii hybrid), in late summer; M.cambrica, M.grandis, M.quintuplinervia, M.sheldonii hybrid and their cultivators may also be propagated by division after flowering.

Slugs and snails can cause damage.
