Description

Melastoma genus (Indian rhododendron). There are about 70 species of evergreen shrubs and small trees, they produce large, soft leaves with prominent veins. The flowers are white, pink or purple terminal flowers they will bloom throughout most of the year in tropical climates. They will require full light or partial shade and fertile, well drained soil.

Grown for their flowers and foliage.

Cultivation

They are frost tender, with a minimum temperature of 10-13C. They will require full light or partial-shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Pruning is tolerated in late winter if necessary.

Propagation

You can propagate from softwood or greenwood cuttings taken in spring or summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Red spider mite and whitefly may be problematic.
