Description

Acacia sieberiana (Paperbark thorn). This species of tree has an umbrella-shaped habit and produces bipinnate, medium green leaves. The spherical flowers are white-cream and the bark is papery, which gives this plant its common name.

Interest and use

This tree is used in traditional medicine to treat coughs, colds, fevers and urinary tract inflammation. The wood is hard and used for tool handles and furniture. The inner bark provides fibres for use in textiles and beadwork. The flowers provide food for bees and hives are placed under the trees. Like all Acacias, this plant fixes nitrogen in the soil. The gum is used as an adhesive, for ink-making and for food.

Cultivation

When grown under glass grow in a loam-based compost with full light. When grown outdoors grow in a moderately fertile soil with full sun and a little shelter.
