Abelmoschus genus (Okra). This genus consists of about 15 species of annuals and biennials from the tropics of Africa and Asia. They are grown for the flowers and for their edible pods. The bark is tough and can be used for fibre, and the leaves are maple-like. The hibiscus-like flowers are yellow with purple centres.

You can grow Abelmoschus in fertile well-drained soil with full sun.
By seed in the spring. Seed can be sown under protection at about 12C in late winter or early spring, or sown outside after thr danger of frosts have passed.
Watch out for slugs, fungal disease, rust, powdery mildew, red spider mites. White fly may be a problem under glass.
