Nothofagus genus (Southern beech). There are about 25 species of evergreen and deciduous trees in this genus. They are fast-growing, and have dark green leaves with toothed margins. They produce small fruits which each contain 3 triangular seeds known as beechnuts.

Grown for their habit, foliage and for the deciduous species, autumn colour.
They are fully to frost hardy and will grow in a variety of climates as long as they protection from strong winds. They prefer fertile, moist, but well-drained, acidic soil, with a position in full sun or semi-shade. They are not resistant to strong winds, and should have the shelter of other trees.
You can propagate from cuttings in the summer or seed in autumn.
Root rot may be problematic.
