Description

Opuntia genus (Prickly pear). These perennial cacti range from small, alpine, ground-cover plants to large, evergreen tropical trees. The mature plants carry masses of short-spined, pear-shaped, green, yellow, red or purple fruits.

Cultivation

They are fully hardy to frost tender, (with a minimum temperature range of 5-10C). They will thrive in sunny, hot, dry conditions in moderately fertile, gritty, well-drained, humus-rich soil.

You can propagate by seeds or stem cuttings in spring or summer.

Prone to scale insects and mealy bugs.
