Description

Origanum genus (Marjoram). These are deciduous sub-shrubs and perennials, sometimes with overwintering leaf rosettes. Most of the species have arching, prostrate stems.

Interest and use

Grown as culinary herbs, others for their clusters of tubular, usually pink flowers. Suitable for coastal conditions.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy and will prefer full sun with a moderately fertile, well-drained, alkaline soil. Make sure you trim the excess growth regularly.

Propagation

Propagate by division in spring, by cuttings of non-flowering shoots in early summer or by seed in autumn or spring.
