Description

Papaver somniferum (Opium poppy). This hardy annual species is highly ornamental and will produce deep purple and red blooms. The fruits and sap are poisonous.

Cultivation

They are fully to frost hardy and will prefer little or no shade with deep, moist, well-drained soil. You should sow the seed in spring or autumn.

Propagation

Sow in spring, thin out seedlings to 30cm. Prune Oct-Dec.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Downy mildew on undersides of leaves. Pull off and burn affected leaves.
