Description

Paulownia tomentosa (Empress tree). This is a spectacular tree with tropical leaves and violet coloured, fragrant flowers which form in the autumn and open the following spring. They are about 5cm long. The leaves are about 15-30cm long and light green.

Cultivation

They grow in well-drained, fertile soil, with ample moisture in summer. Needs shelter from strong winds. Fully to frost hardy.

Propagation

Propagate from seed or root cuttings taken either in late summer or in winter.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Buds and young growth of small plants may be damaged by very hard frosts in winter. Honey fungus and leaf spot.
