Description

Pelargonium genus (Geranium). These are mainly summer-flowering perennials. They are evergreen, often cultivated as annuals. The leaves if crushed may either be rose, lemon or peppermint scented and are toothed, lobed, scalloped or broad. The flowers will bloom in various colours.

Characteristics

Annuals or Perennials, Evergreens, Fragrants

Other common names

Pelargonium

Origin

S. Africa, Namibia

Interest and use

Grown for their foliage and colourful flowers. Some are grown for the fragrance of their leaves. They are useful in pots or as bedding plants; in warm conditions flowers are borne almost continuously. Suitable for coastal conditions.

Cultivation

The plants are frost-tender (minimum temperature of 5C) but dislike hot, humid conditions. They are often treated like annuals for summer bedding in colder climates. In warmer climates with long hours of daylight they will flower almost all the time. They should be grown in a sunny well light and well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. Dead-head frequently and fertilized regularly if grown in pots; do not over-water. Plants may be kept through winter in the greenhouse by cutting back in autumn-winter to 12cm and repotting.

Propagation

Root division or softwood cuttings from spring to autumn.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Prone to vine weevils, aphids, grey mould and mealy bugs.
