Phellodendron genus. These are deciduous trees; there are about 10 species. The leaves are shiny, light green and pinnate they will turn yellow in the autumn. The male and female flowers are produced on different plants, they are small and yellow-green in colour and are followed by blackberry-like fruits.
Grown for their foliage which colours well in autumn.
They are extremely hardy and will tolerate both frost and harsh sun, although they will prefer protection from harsh winds. They grow well in full sun, with fertile, well-drained soil.
You can germinate the seeds in spring, or propagate from cuttings such as root cuttings in the winter or by grafting or layering in summer.
