Description

Phellodendron amurense (Amur oak). This species produces a rigorous root system. The sexes are separate; the female trees have white flowers in early summer. The bark is cork-like and has an unusual texture that is grey-black in colour. The huge branches grow in an open pattern allowing electric lines to go through the branching system with minimal pruning.

Cultivation

They are extremely hardy. They will tolerate both frost and harsh sun, although they will prefer protection from harsh winds. They grow well in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil.
