Phyllostachys genus (Madake). There are about 80 species of medium and large growing bamboos which are evergreen, the plants have spreading rhizomes. The leaves are lance-shaped with cross veins that give a tessellated appearance. The flowers are produced at varying intervals but are not decorative.
Used for hedging as well as for ornamentation. The woody stems can have many uses.
They will thrive in a sheltered position that is not too dry.
You can propagate by seed in spring or autumn, or by division in autumn; however particular cultivars should be propagated by division only.
Usually little trouble from pests and diseases.
