Description

Araucaria genus (Monkey puzzle tree). This is a genus with 19 species of large evergreen conifers with leathery foliage. The leaves are spirally arranged and usually triangular. They will produce seeds which are exposed on the scales of fruits. As with most conifers, they will produce woody fruits called cones and needle-like leaves.

Characteristics

Woody perennials, Evergreens, Conifers or Trees

Origin

New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, E. Australia, New Guinea, Argentina, Chile, S. Brazil.

Interest and use

Grown mainly as architectural trees, for their habit and foliage. Some species are cultivated for their timber or for their edible nuts.

Cultivation

If the conifer produces more than one leader, to maintain the general conical habit remove all but one leader. To restrict the height of the plant, the leader can be cut back.

Propagation

Seed sown in autumn or spring (but forms selected for leaf colour do not come true). Evergreen current growth cuttings in autumn to spring. Deciduous softwood cuttings in summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Honey fungus may be a problem; young plants are more susceptible.
