Description

Araucaria araucana (Monkey puzzle tree). This species has spreading branches with pointed dark green leaves. The hardiest of all the Araucarias, it will grow slowly when young and will reach a height of 20m. The national tree of Chile, it can live to over a 1000 years old. This tree is often called a 'living fossil' as it first emerged as a species in the Mesozoic era.

Cultivation

Watch out for the thorns. It will prefer a moist, well drained soil but will tolerate drought once established.

If you are growing it for its seeds, it doesn't produce them until it is between 30 and 40 years old.

Propagation

Seed sown in autumn or spring (but forms selected for leaf colour do not come true). Evergreen current growth cuttings in autumn to spring. Deciduous softwood cuttings in summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Honey fungus may be a problem; young plants are more susceptible.
