Description

Araucaria cunninghamii (Hoop pine). This Araucaria has awl-shaped, glossy, scale-like leaves and produces cones which disintegrate when they are mature; releasing the ripe seeds. The rough bark has hoop-like markings.

Origin

New South Wales, Queensland, New Guinea

Interest and use

The tree is mainly grown for timber and used for plywood, flooring, furniture, boats, veneer, joinery and paneling. The resin is used as a cement by Native Australians.

The seeds are a food source for sulphur-crested white cockatoos (Cacatua galerita) amongst other wildlife.
