Description

Platanus genus (Plane tree). This genus has about 6 species of large deciduous trees. The trees have flaking mottled bark. The leaves are 5-lobed and large. Brown seed balls which hang in clusters on the trees are produced in the winter.

Interest and use

Grown for their habit, foliage and flaking bark. They thrive in urban conditions.

Cultivation

They will need deep, rich well-drained soil in a sunny site and can be transplanted.

Propagation

You can propagate from seed or cuttings or by layering. Propagate P.acerifolia hybrid by hardwood cuttings in early winter.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Susceptible to the fungal disease plane anthracnose, except P.orientalis. Foliage prone to lacebugs.
