Description

Pyracantha genus (Firethorn). There are about 7 species of large shrubs which are grown for their evergreen foliage and abundant, bright red, orange or yellow berries in the autumn and winter. They produce clusters of small, white flowers which are borne on short spurs along the branches in spring.

Interest and use

Grown for hedging, their bee and bird attracting foliage, flowers and fruits. Suitable for northern and eastern aspects. Suitable for coastal conditions.

Cultivation

They will need a sunny position for there profuse display of berries. To produce a compact habit on a plant grow against a wall, train and cut back long shoots after flowering.

Propagation

You can propagate from seeds or cuttings.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Is susceptible to coral spot, scale insects, aphids, caterpillars, scab and fireblight.
