Description

Acer crataegifolium (Hawthorn-leaved maple). This is an upright deciduous spreading tree. It produces pale yellow flowers in terminal spikes and can reach a height of 9m. The Japanese name for the tree 'urikaede' means 'melon' because the pattern on the mature bark, which is green, and green-brown, is said to resemble a melon skin. The younger branches are streaked green and white. The foliage emerges green-burgundy and matures to a dark blue-green, tinged with red. In the autumn the foliage turns orange and the fruit is flushed with pink-red.
