Description

Acer diabolicum (Devil Maple). Also known as Acer diabolicum purpurascens and Acer purpurascens. This is a round-headed species of Maple. Male trees have clusters of dark pink flowers produced in spring. In spring, the large leaves emerge purple, turning to mid green, then turn bright red in the autumn. The fruits are bristly, which give the plant its common name of 'Horned Maple'.

In Latin, the word 'acer' means hard or sharp. Maple wood was used by the Romans to make lances.

Cultivation

Leaf eating caterpillars or aphids sometimes infest plants. Also prone to scale insects, tar spot, Verticillium wilt, leaf scorch and honey fungus.
