Description

Rosmarinus genus (Rosemary). There are about 12 species in this genus. These small shrubs will rarely grow more than 1.2m tall. They have narrow needle-like leaves which are dark green and aromatic. The flowers are blue and held in short clusters.

Characteristics

Evergreens, Fragrants

Origin

Mediterranean

Interest and use

Grown for their flowers and aromatic, bee attracting foliage, which can be used as a culinary herb. Suitable for coastal conditions.

Cultivation

They are frost hardy, but in cold areas grow against a south or west facing wall, with poor, well drained soil. Cut back frost damaged plants to healthy wood in spring. Straggly, old plants may be cut back hard at the same time. Trim hedges after flowering.

Propagation

You can propagate from seeds, dropping, or semi-ripe or heel cuttings in summer.
