Description

Acer japonicum (Fullmoon maple). The new growth in this species is very distinctive with pale green leaves with a coating of silky white hairs that disappear as the leaves mature into an olive green with 7-11 lobes on each leaf; they will turn bright red in the autumn. It is a rather slow growing maple which needs a sheltered position.

Cultivation

Acers are fully to frost hardy and will require sun or semi-shade in fertile, well-drained soil.

Propagation

Species are propagated by seed, or by grafting or simple layering in late winter or early spring, or by budding in summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Leaf eating caterpillars or aphids sometimes infest plants. Also prone to scale insects, tar spot, Verticillium wilt, leaf scorch and honey fungus.
