Description

Salix genus (Willow). This genus consists of about 300 species of deciduous trees, shrubs and subshrubs. They are fast-growing but relatively short-lived trees, with bright green, lance-shaped and narrow leaves. The flowers are borne in fluffy catkins.

Interest and use

Grown for their habit, foliage, catkins and, in some cases, colourful winter shoots. Suitable for coastal conditions. Attracts butterflies

Cultivation

They will require cool, moist soil with sun or partial-shade. These frost-hardy plants do best in areas with clearly defined seasons. Plants grown for their colourful winter shoots should be cut back hard in early spring, every 1-3 years.

Propagation

You can propagate by semi-ripe cuttings in the summer, by hardwood cuttings in the winter, by seed, or by layering.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Fungal diseases may cause canker. Willows may become infested with such pests as caterpillars, aphids and gall mites.
