Description

Sanguisorba officinalis (Great burnet). This perennial species produces creeping rhizomes which carry upright stems about 1.2m tall. The basal leaves are large with many leaflets which are about 5cm long, and are glossy, dark green and smooth. The flowers are 18mm long with dark reddish purple blooms which will appear in early summer and early autumn. This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Upright, branched above. ROOT: Thick rootstock. HAIRS: Absent STIPULES: Present, lower papery, upper like leaflets, toothed. LEAF-STALK: Present BRACTS: 2-3 beneath each flower. FLOWER STALK: Absent. SEPALS: 4, coloured. PETALS: Absent STAMENS: 4, long, crimson. STIGMA: 1 per flower. OVARY: 1, 1-celled. SEEDS: 1, not released.
