Description

Sauromatum venosum (Voodoo bulb). This species will produce bold tropical foliage and strange, yellow, arum-like flower with purple-spots, which emerge first in spring and grow to 3 feet in height and just 1 inch wide. The foliage is born on distinctive green and black mottled stems and consists of a single, horse-shoe shaped leaf about 38cm long which appears after the flower.

A distinctive 2 inch round seed head appears after flowering at the base of the leaves.

Cultivation

Hardy to -20c partial-shade and humus-rich, fertile well-drained soil. You can propagate by removing offsets in winter when the plants are dormant. Lift the tuber before the frosts.
