Description

Saxifraga genus (Saxifrage). These are perennials, biennials and annuals, consisting of about 440 species of evergreens and semi-evergreens. The flowers are mostly white, and sometimes they are spotted with pink, but other colours are also available.

Interest and use

Grown for their flowers and attractive foliage. Excellent in rock gardens, screens, raised beds and alpine houses.

Cultivation

The soil conditions and position of light will depend on the specie. They will also vary in hardiness from fully to frost hardy to marginally frost hardy. Most form tight cushions and flower in early spring, flower stems being barely visible above leaves.

Propagation

Seed in autumn or by rooted offsets in winter.
