This is my Wollemi pine, showing detail of foliage and profile. It has done really well and went through the 2010/11 winter having just been planted, then…
Sciadopitys genus (Umbrella pine). This genus consists of one species, of conifer conical tree. It is upright, single-trunked and is very slow growing. As a conifer it is distinguished from other trees and shrubs by producing seeds which are exposed on the scales of fruits. As in most conifers there are woody fruits called cones and needle-like leaves.
They will prefer a cool climate with cool, moist humus-rich soil, with light shade when their young. You can propagate from seed. If the conifer produces more than one leader, to maintain the general conical habit remove all but one leader. To restrict the height of the plant, the leader can be cut back.
Seed sown in autumn or spring (but forms selected for leaf colour do not come true). Evergreen current growth cuttings in autumn to spring. Deciduous softwood cuttings in summer.
Honey fungus may be a problem; young plants are more susceptible.
