Description

Sherardia arvensis (Field madder). This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Many, low-growing, 4-angled. ROOT: Slender, reddish. HAIRS: Sparse, pointing backwards on stem-angles. STIPULES: Present, resembling leaves. LEAF-STALK: Absent BRACTS: 8-10 in ring beneath head. FLOWER STALK: Shorter than flower. SEPALS: 4-6, spear-shaped, fringed with hairs. PETALS: 4, equal, bases form thin tube, lobes oval. STAMENS: 4, protruding. STIGMA: 2; style long, forked. OVARY: 1, below sepals, 2-celled. SEEDS: 1 per half, not released.
