Description

Skimmia genus. This is a genus of 4 species of evergreen, spring-flowering shrubs and trees. They produce leaves which are oval, glossy deep green and about 10-15 cm long. The flowers are creamy white and are borne in densely packed conical clusters of small starry flowers which are white or cream. The flowers are followed by black or red berries.

Interest and use

Grown for their flowers, aromatic foliage and their fruits.

Cultivation

Skimmias are shade-lovers and grow very well with rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias. They are fully to frost hardy and need a moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil.

Propagation

Propagate by seed in autumn or from semi-ripe cuttings in late summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

Too much sun or poor soil may cause chlorosis.
