Description

Skimmia japonica. This is a dense evergreen shrub, with aromatic foliage with a fine texture and fragrance. The flowers are tiny and white, and will appear in early spring to late spring, and are followed by bright red, decorative berries. They will grow to a height and spread of about 5ft. They prefer a partially shaded setting with moist soil.

Cultivation

Skimmias are shade-lovers and grow very well with rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias. They need a moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil.

Propagation

Propagate by seed in autumn or from semi-ripe cuttings in late summer.

Too much sun or poor soil may cause chlorosis.
