Description

Solandra maxima (Golden chalice vine). A giant climber from Mexico to Colombia and Venezuela valued for its huge flowers and ability to cover very large areas. This is a rampant, woody vine growing to 30 ft (9 m) or more and requiring plenty of space and a sturdy support. The yellow flowers, up to 10 in (25 cm) across and with a purplish stripe down the centre of each petal, are produced in spring and summer. It tolerates wind, dry conditions and salt spray, so it is an excellent plant for seaside gardens.

Cultivation

These plants need a warm climate to thrive, they are susceptible to frost. Grow in a warmed greenhouse in cold area otherwise plant outdoors in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil.
