Description

Sonchus asper (Prickly sowthistle). This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Stout, upright, 5-angled, hollow; sap milky. ROOT: Slender tap-root. HAIRS: Absent STIPULES: Absent LEAF-STALK: Mostly absent. BRACTS: Long, smooth around head; none between florets. FLOWER STALK: Absent; longish under heads. SEPALS: A ring of hairs. PETALS: 5, joined, flattened above, 5-toothed. STAMENS: 5, joined into tube. STIGMA: 1, 2-lobed; style long. OVARY: 1, below petals, 1-celled. SEEDS: 1, not released.
