Description

Sophora genus (Kowhai). This genus consists of about 50 species of deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs and perennials. The leaves are pinnate and pale green, with clusters of pea-shaped flowers which are borne on short racemes in shades of yellow to cream or greyish blue.

Cultivation

These are generally adaptable plants that thrive under a wide range of conditions. They will prefer moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial-shade.

Seed in autumn; semi-evergreens may also be raised from softwood cuttings in summer.

Pests, diseases or disorders

In Australia and New Zealand caterpillars of the kowhai moth can defoliate plants in summer.
