Description

Stellaria media (Common chickweed). This species produces showy, small white flowers. This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Much-branched, low-growing, turning upwards. ROOT: Slender tap-root HAIRS: 2 lines along stem, sepals stickily hairy STIPULES: Absent LEAF-STALK: Stalked or upper stalkless. BRACTS: Present FLOWER STALK: Lengthening in fruit SEPALS: 5, narrow papery edge PETALS: 5, mostly shorter than sepals, deeply 2-lobed STAMENS: Usually 5, rarely up to 8. STIGMA: 3 OVARY: 1, 1-celled SEEDS: Many, kidney-shaped, rough.
