Description

Stewartia genus (Deciduous camellia). There are about 15 to 20 species of deciduous or evergreen small trees or shrubs. The flowers are usually white with prominent golden stamens. The leaves are elliptical and will develop bright orange and red autumn tones. They are fully to frost hardy and will need a sunny position.

Interest and use

Grown for their late summer flowers, autumn colour and usually peeling attractive bark.

Cultivation

Grow in moist, humus-rich, well-drained, neutral to acidic soil in sun or partial-shade. Resents being transplanted.

Propagation

You can propagate from seeds in the autumn or from softwood cuttings in the summer.
