Description

Thymus praecox (Hairy thyme). This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Long, creeping, forming mats. ROOT: Woody stock; stems root. HAIRS: On 2 sides of stem, long on leaf-edges. STIPULES: Absent LEAF-STALK: Very short. BRACTS: Lowest leaf-like. FLOWER STALK: Much shorter than flower. SEPALS: 5, bases form tube, upper 3 teeth, lower 2 long. PETALS: 5, bases joined, upper 2 lobes nearly joined. STAMENS: 4, protruding on female flowers. STIGMA: 2 on long, forked style. OVARY: 1, deeply 4-lobed. SEEDS: 1 per segment, not released.
