Description

Tigridia genus (Mexican shell flower). There are about 12 species in this genus. The flowers have striking spotted centres with 3 bold outer petals in red, pink, orange, yellow, purple or white. The flowers are short lived and usually only last a day.

Interest and use

Grown for their highly colourful but short-lived flowers.

Cultivation

They are half hardy and will need a position in full sun and well-drained soil, you must give it ample water in the summer. Plant in spring. Lift in autumn; then partially dry bulbs and store in peat or sand at 8-12C.

Propagation

You can propagate from seeds in the spring.
