Description

Bambusa oldhamii (Giant timber bamboo). Sometimes called the Oldham Bamboo this bamboo can grow to immense heights of over 15m. The culms or woody stems are often used in building work such as scaffolding in Asian countries. The culms may have a diameter of 3 to 12cm and when they are moved by the wind a cracking sound may be heard as they brush against each other. The leaves are tough and oval about 25cm long.

Cultivation

Under glass, grow in loamless potting compost in bright indirect light. Maintain high humidity and water moderately. Outdoors, grow in moist, fertile, humus-rich soil, in a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade.

Propagation

Seed in spring or autumn, or by division in autumn; however forms should be propagated by division only.
