Description

Vaccinium myrtillus (Blaeberry). This is a compact semi-deciduous shrub about 45cm tall. It has small oval leaves with finely-toothed edges. In the spring it will produce 6-12mm wide dusky red, bell-shaped flowers. The fruits are edible blue-black berries. This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Upright, many, young shoots 3-angled. ROOT: Creeping underground stem. HAIRS: Absent STIPULES: Absent LEAF-STALK: Shorter than blade. BRACTS: 2, scale-like. FLOWER STALK: About equaling flower. SEPALS: 4-5, joined, forming scarcely lobed ring. PETALS: 4-5, joined, globular, tips bent back. STAMENS: 8-10 STIGMA: 1, club-shaped, long style. OVARY: 1, below sepals, 4-5 celled. SEEDS: Many, small.
