Description

Vriesea fenestralis. This species is epiphytic bromeliad with funnel-shaped, rosettes of arching, broadly linear,pale green leaves about 45cm long, with rounded tips, and a purple underside. The yellow-green sheaths are spotted reddish-brown. In mid summer, spike-like racemes of green bracts and yellow-green white blooms are borne.

The flowers open at night and have a smell of rotten fruit, in the wild they are pollinated by bats.

Cultivation

They are frost tender, min 15C, and will need semi-shade and a rooting medium of equal parts, with humus-rich soil and either sphagnum moss or bark chips used for orchid culture. Use soft water moderately when in growth and sparingly at other times from mid-spring to mid-autumn, keeping rosette centres filled with water.

Propagation

Propagation is by offsets or seeds in the spring.
