Description

Vriesea hieroglyphica (King of bromeliads). This species is epiphytic bromeliad with funnel rosettes of arching strap-shaped scaly yellow-green leaves marked dark green with a purplish brown underside. The flowers are borne in mid summer with spike-like panicles of green-yellow bracts and tubular, yellow blooms.

Cultivation

They are frost tender, min 15C, and will need semi-shade and a rooting medium of equal parts, with humus-rich soil and either sphagnum moss or bark chips used for orchid culture. Use soft water moderately when in growth and sparingly at other times from mid-spring to mid-autumn, keeping rosette centres filled with water.

Propagation

Propagation is by offsets or seeds in the spring.
